Course Location

Malta and Gozo offer underwater scenery considered amongst the best in the entire Mediterranean. The crystal-clear waters of the archipelago guarantee exceptional visibility throughout the year. You will explore sheltered bays with sandy bottoms perfect for taking your first steps. The mild sea temperature makes the dive pleasant and refreshing for everyone.

Furthermore, the coastal landscapes provide a natural setting of rare beauty. Underwater Academy will take you to the most stunning spots across the Maltese islands. For this reason, every dive turns into an indelible memory over time.

Prerequisites required

  • Minimum age of 10 years old.
  • Health conditions suitable for scuba diving activities.
  • Ability to feel comfortable in deep water.
  • No previous diving experience required.

What the student will learn

During this session, you will learn how to use scuba equipment in shallow water. Initially, you’ll discover how easy it is to breathe underwater thanks to the regulator. You will learn a few key exercises to manage your mask and the pressure in your ears. Additionally, you will acquire the fundamental safety rules to move correctly in the blue. Your instructor will show you how to swim efficiently with fins. Finally, you will experience the unique sensation of weightlessness in total control.

Certification and exams

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving does not result in a permanent final licence. However, you will receive an official recognition certificate confirming your participation in the experience. There are no stressful theory or practical exams to pass. This activity is mainly designed for you to have fun and get to know the marine environment. However, the completed experience can be credited towards the Open Water Diver course.

What is included

The experience includes the technical equipment necessary to dive safely. You will therefore receive the BCD, regulator, mask, and fins for the session. However, the wetsuit is not included, and you can rent it directly from us at Underwater Academy.

Course description

This “baptism of the sea” is just the start of an extraordinary adventure without limits. Many participants decide to sign up straight away for the PADI Open Water Diver course to become certified divers. If you’re short on time instead, you might consider the PADI Scuba Diver programme.

What happens if I don’t feel comfortable during the dive?

Your instructor will stay right by your side at all times to ensure you feel completely at ease and have constant support. We start off in very shallow water where you can stand up and touch the bottom whenever you like. The pace is nice and slow, respecting your own personal timing to get used to everything. If you decide to stop, we’ll do so immediately without any pressure at all.

Can I take part if I wear contact lenses?

Spot on, yes. Loads of divers wear contact lenses during their dives without any trouble. We just recommend keeping your eyes shut tight if you ever need to clear water from your mask. Alternatively, you can ask us for a prescription mask if we’ve got one available at our diving centre.

How long does the whole Discover Scuba Diving experience take?

The full activity usually takes about half a day, which covers the theory, getting kitted up, and the dive itself. You’ll spend roughly 45 minutes underwater, depending on how fast you breathe your air. Don’t forget to factor in time for the initial briefing and some chill-out time after the dive.

What do I need to bring with me on the day?

What to Bring for Scuba Diving in Malta | Diving Checklist

All you need to bring is your swimwear, a towel, and plenty of enthusiasm. We’ll take care of providing all the heavy technical gear needed for the excursion. Remember to pack some sunblock and a bottle of water to stay hydrated once you’re back on dry land.

Can I dive if I’ve got a flight shortly after?

Flying After Scuba Diving: Safety Guidelines & Wait Times

PADI recommends waiting at least 12 hours after a single dive before hopping on a plane. This safety window allows your body to properly clear any residual nitrogen. It’s best to plan your experience around your travel schedule to keep things completely safe.
