Recommended time of year:

All year round, with optimal conditions from May to October

Average water temperature:

16°C at the surface (winter) / 26°C at the surface (summer) – 15°C at maximum depth (winter) / 24°C at maximum depth (summer)

Technical suggestions:

Planning a dive at the Ċirkewwa Shallow Shelf requires careful selection of thermal equipment according to the season. During the summer months, from July to September, a 3 mm or 5 mm wetsuit is usually sufficient to enjoy the reef in complete comfort, while during transitional periods such as May or November it is preferable to opt for a 7 mm wetsuit or a semi-dry suit to better manage heat loss during long stays in the water. For those choosing to dive during the winter months, a dry suit becomes the ideal solution for handling colder temperatures without sacrificing the duration of the experience.

Although the site is characterized by excellent natural visibility, the use of a dive torch is highly recommended to illuminate the many crevices, small tunnels, and cracks in the reef where octopuses, moray eels, and scorpionfish hide, revealing the vivid colors of the marine flora. Regarding breathing gas, the use of air is standard due to the moderate depth; however, the use of Nitrox represents an excellent strategic choice to increase safety margins and reduce nitrogen load, especially if repetitive dives are planned throughout the day or if divers intend to explore nearby deeper wrecks such as the Rozi or the P29.
