Diving at Għar Lapsi Malta: Caves, Reef and Black John | Diving Guide

Dive Site Profile:

Site name:

Għar Lapsi (includes Għar Lapsi Cave, Finger Reef, Middle Reef and Black John)

Type of dive:

Cave dive, coastal reef and offshore reef

Historical background:

The name Għar Lapsi translates as “Cave of the Ascension”; the site also features the “Crib”, an underwater nativity scene with life-size statues located at approximately 22 meters.

Seabed type:

Rocky with limestone formations, caves, Posidonia seagrass meadows and sandy areas

Depth:

From 3 meters (cave entrance) down to 38 meters (end of Black John)

Suitable for experienced divers:

PADI Open Water Diver (for the caves and inner reefs) or PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (for the Black John site).

Recommended time of year:

From April to November, although it can be dived all year round with favorable weather conditions.

Average water temperature:

At the surface approximately 16°C in winter and 26°C in summer; at maximum depth the temperature remains stable compared to the surface in winter (around 15–16°C), while in summer it may drop slightly due to the thermocline.

Technical Suggestions:

To fully enjoy diving at Għar Lapsi, it is essential to choose the correct thermal protection according to the season. During the summer months, from June to September, a 3 mm or 5 mm wetsuit is usually sufficient thanks to the pleasant water temperatures, while during winter and spring a 7 mm wetsuit, semi-dry suit or dry suit is strongly recommended to ensure maximum thermal comfort during longer explorations. Although the cave system is well illuminated by sunlight filtering through openings in the ceiling, the use of an underwater torch is highly recommended to admire the vivid colors of the corals and discover the small organisms hidden within the crevices. Regarding breathing gas, air is suitable for most routes, but the use of Nitrox is recommended especially for divers planning to explore deeper sections such as Black John or conduct repetitive dives, allowing safer extended bottom times.
