MV Karwela Wreck

Wreck Diving
Historical Background:
The MV Karwela was a former passenger ferry launched in 1943 that operated in Maltese waters for many years. It was intentionally sunk on August 12, 2006, off the coast of Xatt l’Ahmar in Gozo to create an artificial reef and an attraction site for diving tourism.
Seabed Type:
Sandy
Depth:
From 30 meters (upper deck) down to approximately 42 meters (seabed)
Suitable for Experienced Divers:
Advanced Open Water Diver with Deep Diver specialty
Recommended Time of Year:
From May to October for stable sea and weather conditions
Average Water Temperature:
15°C – 26°C at the surface / 14°C – 17°C at maximum depth
Technical Recommendations:
Thermal planning for exploring the Karwela requires careful attention because the wreck rests on a seabed reaching 42 meters where the temperature drops significantly. During the summer months, a 5mm or 7mm wetsuit may be sufficient for the upper levels, but for divers wishing to penetrate the wreck or carry out extended bottom times, a semi-dry suit provides superior protection against the cold at depth. During winter or for technical decompression dives, a dry suit becomes an almost essential choice to maintain the necessary comfort. An underwater torch is an indispensable tool for illuminating the famous internal staircase and the large ferry halls where natural light begins to fade. Regarding gas management, the use of Nitrox is strongly recommended as it allows a significant extension of no-decompression time on a wreck that develops almost entirely beyond 30 meters in depth.
